The interview is an important part of the recruitment process which gives you an opportunity to show the employer that you are suitable for the job. First impressions count, therefore, it is important to be dressed appropriately. Smart business attire is generally preferred. No jeans or trainers! Other points to remember are:
Plan your route so you know where you are going and how long it will take. If using public transport, research times and routes beforehand so that you arrive on time.
Be punctual for your interview; this will create a good first impression.
Make sure your mobile is switched off (except if it is being used for a telephone interview!).
Know about the job you are being interviewed for. Review your application and the job description before you go in case they are referred to during the interview.
Know as much as you can about the potential employer and preferably the department you would be working in if successful. This will involve doing some research prior to the interview.
Be aware of your body language and what it is 'saying'. Don't slouch, fidget or stare out of the window!!
Prepare some answers so you can respond effectively to questions that you may be asked. Have a look at our website for resources to help with this (link below). You can practice with an adviser - see below for details of how to contact us to arrange this. Have some of your own questions ready such as "How is performance measured for this position" or "Where will this role be located?"
Remember to take any documents that have been requested.
Preparation for a Skype, telephone or video interview is just as important as a face-to-face interview. Take the call in a quiet place without interruptions and make sure technical equipment is working (for example, is your laptop fully charged?).
